Creativity Where You’d Least Expect It

Just east of Albuquerque near the village of Tijeras, New Mexico, there lies a length of Route 66 that has a special rumble strip cut into it. If you drive over them at exactly 45 m.p.h., the sound of your vibrating tires will play a portion of “America the Beautiful.” The National Geographic Society worked in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Transportation on a series they were doing, called “Crowd Control,” to develop this method of encouraging drivers to slow down.
