Design Find of the Week: Arch Bike Racks by ANOVA
We spotted a tweet the other day from photographer Demond Meek wondering who had produced these pretty great arch bike racks around the city.
We decided to utilize the power of our community following and retweet it in hopes that someone would know who designed/manufactured these. One of the things we love doing the most on the Egotist is finding great creative work in St. Louis and making sure that everyone knows who's responsible for that work. Luckily, Jason Tasso, a designer at Metagramme, responded with the correct answer: Anova Furnishings, based right here in St. Louis.
It appears, from this recent news release, that Anova has recently undergone a name change and brand redesign (from the much more boring 'Landscape Brands').
Which, upon reading of this choice little morsel, thusly leads us to an entirely new query altogether! Namely, who's the responsible party behind the rebrand and redesign of Anova?!
Away ye investigative hordes as we chortle in delight of all this local-design scavengry!

The rebranding was done by Spoke. Metagramme has been working with Anova on other recent projects, such as their new iPad App.
Thanks Jason for sharing. Yes, Spoke led the rebranding efforts for Anova. :)
I'm the CEO at ANOVA, and I'll accept the harsh but fair characterization of our previous brand. The design of the bike rack really belongs to Justin Gerard, the Industrial Designer, for Anova. Our company just brings it to market. There's a great story behind the conception of this piece. I want to say he first sketched it back in 2007, but my memory may be a little fuzzy. Best to get the story from Justin. Easiest to reach him through email: justin@annovafurnishings.com
CEO Commenting is a first for us. Thanks for the information - we'll hit him up.
From Justin Gerard:
Yes, I designed this bike rack back in 2007 for a design competition hosted by the St. Louis Bicycle Federation. They ran an ad in the newspaper advertising this competition so, I came up with this design in my free time and it was selected as the winner. I had been working for Landscape Brands during this time and they supported my efforts to continue pursuing the design. A few years passed by with limited success at installing the bike racks around the city, so the St. Louis Bicycle Federation granted permission to ANOVA formerly known as Landscape Brands to produce the bike racks. We now offer this bike rack in our catalog and online (part#LBCBR): anovafurnishings.com. It is offered in a Stainless Steel or Powder coated finish with a standard or customized center medallion. In front of Clayton High school and businesses around St. Louis, you may find some of these bike racks with customized center medallions. The St. Louis Bicycle Federation did achieve their goal of getting these bike racks installed around the city and hopefully there will be many more installed in the coming years to help support a more bicycle friendly city.
