New Pop I & New Pop II

/ Comments (3)

. On September 5, we are hosting artist Stan Chisholm's exhibit "NewPop I." A few days earlier, "NewPop II," the second half of the multi-site installation, opens at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary. This exhibit's themes deal with icons and memes in pop culture and media. The St. Louis Artists' Guild will also be hosting Stan Chisholm's "Moneybags" workshop, which ties into the exhibition's themes. Should be very interesting and thought-provoking for all those in advertising & graphic-design related professions!

The St Louis Artists Guild and Hoffman LaChance Contemporary in partnership, are pleased to announce NewPop I and NewPop II,. The St. Louis Artists Guild is teaming up with Hoffman LaChance to bring you a set of solo exhibitions by Stan Chisholm (aka 18andCounting), happening simultaneously with one another, NewPop I and NewPop II. NewPop I, opening Sunday September 5, 2010 from 1-3pm is located at the St Louis Artists Guild and NewPop II, opening September 3, 2010 from 6-8pm is located at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary.

As two inextricably linked exhibitions, like the relationship one would find between twins, NewPop I and NewPop II take a stand and rebelliously stab at the anatomy of pop culture. Through solidarity, topics such as memes, media, icons, commodity and quality will be scrutinized through an array of artworks ranging from sculpture, installation, text, book and drawings. The viewer will not be able to understand one with out the other. It is imperative that both exhibitions be considered, they finish one another's sentence and dot each others "i's". New Pop I and New Pop II is taking the tag-team approach to visual art.

Chisholm is an interdisciplinary artist from St. Louis, MO who studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His collages, drawings, and mixed media installations reveal a growing cast of over 700 characters or mascots that serve as a visual lexicon for the moods, personal attributes or feelings explored in his work.
Chisholm’s work has been exhibited at Laumeier Sculpture Park, City Museum (St. Louis), the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, and the Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago).

In order to highlight the ideas Chisholm is presenting in NewPop, he is also facilitating a workshop entitled, MoneyBags, part of an ongoing project. Stan will be joined by his collaborator and Chicago based artist, Lisa See Kim. Working with a motif usually seen only in cartoons, MoneyBags is a public art project that transfers the recognizable image of the moneybag from the comic to the real and playfully challenges society’s values, the role of currency, the idea of ownership, and human impulses towards greed and generosity. Moneybags has multiple iterations, and is not bounded by any single project. The workshop will be held at both locations on Saturday and Sunday September 25th and 26th from 10am to 4pm. More information to be announced.
