• MOUSTAIR - Movember Madness

    / Comments (0)

Where men meets moustaches meets hair meets moustaches meets hair meets MOUSTAIR. Seen any Movember related work recently? Seems like every other city has a moustache related event this month - where's the River City's lip-hair celebration event?

These are the best focused advertisements we've seen discouraging drug use in maybe ever. Honest portraits of meth use & users directed under the amazing eye of Darren Aronofsky. Hopefully these find some air-time all over the nation and especially in the Midwest.

Check out the website MethProject.org which hosts many more hard-hitting vignettes and important information.

  • "Havana" Michael Eastman Book Release & Signing - Thursday at Brennan's

    / Comments (1)

We received this submission showcasing the work of two local artists previously unknown by the Egotist yet who clearly need to be featured on this site. Introducing photographer Michael Eastman & designer Carlos Zamora. We were left fairly awestruck by each artist's respective work and applaud their efforts on this latest event:

    Havana

Join us this Thursday at Brennan's for a Cigar & Spirits Tasting and the presentation of "Havana", Michael Eastman latest book. The book is an exquisite selection of his best photographs after several trips to Cuba in the last 10 years.

Cuban Designer & Illustrator Carlos Zamora, has created the poster for the event. Printed by Elyssia Mann and Steve Brian from All Along Press in Cherokee Street, the poster evokes the faded decadence and melancholy of Havana, once known as "The Paris of the Caribbean".

The sale of the poster will support Cuba Cartel, an online community of contemporary Cuban poster designers living in and out of the Island. "Cartel" is the most used Cuban term for "Poster". The art of poster design in the 60's "armed" the Cuban Revolution with iconic graphic tools that helped to illustrated its social programs. A new generation of Cuban poster designers in the Diaspora -aligned with the ones still in the Island-, are trying to figure it out a way to keep the tradition of illustrating the social evolution of their country. With zero political support, and facing the supply limitations by the American Embargo, Cuban poster designers are challenged by a second graphic revolution: making posters to illustrate the Cuban Transition.

Some of the beautiful mages from the book:

Here's an incredibly informative blog based on the layout and design of the book called The Road to "Havana".

And lastly, the old world ticket design for the event itself:

Clearly we're geeked about everything within this project/event. It's been awhile that we've seen fine art of this standard with St. Louis based artists and we're very excited to introduce them to the community - especially if you've (also) never seen their work before.

  • Modern Steampunk Typeface

Not particularly useful, but cool nonetheless. See the full set by designer Riccardo Sabatini here.
"Mekkanika is a typeface inspired by old mechanics technical drawings, the steampunk visual world, and modern machinery, mixed and merged all together to form letters completely made by these elements, creating a mechanical look like typeface. All based on the letter shapes of the Din Alternate Black font."

  • A Big Red Button - iPhone & Cameras Merge Even Further

    / Comments (0)

POPA is an iPhone attachment that makes taking pictures much easier and enjoyable, and enhances the experience of taking pictures with your phone. In fact, it's a similar feel to a regular point and shoot camera. How do they accomplish this? A big red button.

The gadget also works with the free POPA app, which allows you to set timers, save photos, share photos on Facebook and Twitter, and send to Instagram and Camera+ apps.

The big red button costs approximately US$80.

  • Superhero Geometry - Liam Brazier

    / Comments (0)

We love superhero art. Any new way of representing our favorite character from the comic book or film screen completely appeals to the 14 year old boy (and nerdy, cool, geek girl that you looked over for the junior dance, but is now stunningly more attractive than your boring prom queen wife) in all of us.

Something we find fascinating is that these illustrations were created with the polygon-lasso tool in photoshop. We can't even begin to think of how long that would take to edit and how many layers are involved. Just goes to show how skill & creativity kinda smash whatever process you're "supposed" to follow.

Watch a time-lapse below of Spider-Man being created, or if you have $160 laying around, head on over to his Etsy shop and buy a giclee print of your favorite.

A collection of starlings is called a murmuration. Liberty Smith and Sophie Windsor Clive caught this rare occurrence on video while canoeing on the River Shannon in Ireland.
